Make a little room for Provence

Imagine a small village on the edge of the Luberon: a bakery on the square, shaded lanes and countryside close enough for a walk before breakfast. That is the setting for our fictional guesthouse.

Start close to home. Pick up bread, browse a village market and bring back olives, tomatoes and something for lunch. Leave the hottest part of a summer day for a book in the shade, then head out again when the light softens.

For a day out, build a route around the hilltop villages of the Luberon. Lourmarin, Bonnieux and Roussillon offer different ways to spend a few unhurried hours. Pick one or two rather than trying to fit everything into a day. Check current opening times and market days before setting off.

Walkers can look for short countryside routes and longer marked trails. In hot or dry weather, check local access restrictions, carry water and start early. Lavender is seasonal; the region has plenty to enjoy beyond flowering time.
